The purpose of teaching a Language:

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Skills we teach:

  • Listen and understand
  • Take part in a conversation
  • Read and follow a variety of short stories
  • Write words and short sentences
  • Understand the basic grammar
  • Focus on pronunciation

At Morley Victoria, we believe that learning languages is very important. We want to ensure that our pupils are well-rounded, knowledgeable and confident linguists who have an awareness of countries and cultures other than their own. In Key Stage 2 the children learn French through a carefully crafted, bespoke curriculum that ensures progression of both knowledge and skills through a variety of fun and exciting lessons that include stories, songs, games and visitors. We also enjoy a whole school “Worldwide Week” enabling all children in school to learn more about the world they live in.

We believe that learning a language enriches the curriculum, provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helps to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.
