    Zones of Regulation

The "Zones of Regulation" is a fantastic programme we use at school to help children understand and manage their feelings and energy levels. It simplifies all our emotions into four easy-to-understand coloured zones:

    • Blue Zone: This is when we might feel sad, tired, or a bit poorly.
    • Green Zone: This is our happy, calm, and focused zone – just right for learning!
    • Yellow Zone: Here we might feel a bit frustrated, excited, worried, or even silly.
    • Red Zone: This is when emotions are big, like feeling really cross, terrified, or completely out of control.

Zones of Regulation is a non-judgemental way of teaching children to recognise which zone they're in and understand what might have put them there. Most importantly, it aims to teach them what their individual "tools" or strategies are to help them get back to the Green Zone, which is the best place for learning and getting along with others.

We believe teaching our children to understand and manage their emotions is a vital part of growing up and needs explicit teaching and modelling from the adults around them. This is why we choose to teach Zones of Regulation to the whole school rather than as an intervention-based programme.
